For the second time in less than a year, a Southern Ute Tribal Council member has been arrested on suspicion of drunk driving. Dewitt Baker was arrested by Ignacio Police Department officers over the July 8-9 weekend and was transferred to the Southern Ute Police Department, said Ignacio Town Manager Balty Quintana. The town has an agreement with the tribe to turn over any tribal members who are arrested. The tribe has adopted the state's drivers licenses, but still maintains its own tribal court. Southern Ute Tribal Council Vice Chairman Howard Richards said Baker was on leave July 17. In October 1999, council member Byron Red was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving in Durango. Red, who pleaded guilty to drunk driving in 1993, is scheduled to appear in La Plata County District Court on Sept. 12 for a pretrial hearing in the Durango case.
