Silver Reef takes on a college air with training program

LUMMI, Wash. – The Lummi Nation’s Silver Reef Hotel Casino Spa is becoming a college of sorts, providing 100 percent paid college classes and on-the-job apprenticeship training for Lummi citizens.

The Lummi Educational Advancement Program is a partnership between Silver Reef, Lummi Commercial Company and Tacoma Community College.

The 15-month pilot program consists of three tracks. In the first track, students learn about college placement testing, study skills and time management. In the second track, they take remedial courses in math, reading and writing.

Students who do well on the college placement test will be encouraged to participate in an apprenticeship program and receive on-the-job training in culinary, gaming, hotel and marketing.
