Newt Gingrich posted a strong showing in South Carolina, winning the primaries with 40 percent of the votes and building momentum leading up to the Florida primaries.

Indian Country Today Media Network wanted to highlight some of Gingrich’s memorable quotes throughout the years, covering race to politics and especially talking about himself.

Below is a selection of those quotes:

Building the ego bubble

“The most serious, systematic revolutionary of modern times.” (

“I read Men Who Hate Women and the Women Who Love Them and I found frightening pieces that related to… my own life.” (

“Gingrich primary mission: Advocate of civilization, definer of civilization, teacher of the rules of civilization, leader of the civilizing forces.” (

“I’m not a natural leader, I’m too intellectual; I’m too abstract; I think too much.” (

“It doesn’t matter what I do. People need to hear what I have to say. There’s no one else who can say what I can say. It doesn’t matter what I live.” (

Making issues of the issues

“The most important social welfare program in America is a job.” (BrainyQuote)

“We should replace bilingual education with immersion in English so people learn the common language of the country and they learn the language of prosperity, not the language of living in a ghetto.” (

“We tried to have diplomas without learning, we tried to have jobs without work, we tried to have houses without savings, we tried to have government without responsibility.” (BrainyQuote)

“It is impossible to maintain civilization with 12-year-olds having babies, with 15-year-olds killing each other, with 17-year-olds dying of AIDS and with 18-year-olds getting diplomas when they can’t read.” (

“There’s no room in America for a black racist, a Latino racist, or a white racist, or an Asian racist, or a Native American racist. Now, we’re either color blind or we’re not color blind.” (BrainyQuote)

Political blinders or binders?

“Politics and war are remarkably similar situations.” (

“The idea that a Congressman would be tainted by accepting money from private industry or private sources is essentially a socialist argument.” (

“What is the primary purpose of a political leader? To build a majority. If voters care about parking lots, then talk about parking lots.” (BrainyQuote)

“You can’t trust anybody with power.” (

“I think one of the great problems we have in the Republican Party is that we don’t encourage you to be nasty. We encourage you to be neat, obedient, and loyal and faithful and all those Boy Scout words.” (

Pushing the offensive button

“There is a gay and secular fascism in this country that wants to impose its will on the rest of us.” (International Business Times)

“If the Soviet empire still existed, I’d be terrified. The fact is, we can afford a fairly ignorant presidency now.” (

“People like me are what stand between us and Auschwitz.” (International Business Times)

And of course our Favorite (Wait, it was Stonewall Jackson not Andrew, Newt):

“South Carolina and the Revolutionary War had a young 13-year-old named Andrew Jackson. He was sabred by a British officer and wore a scar his whole life. Andrew Jackson had a pretty clear cut idea about America’s enemies: Kill them!” (
