Members of the Nation continue to press for a halt to development of remaining undeveloped parcels in Southampton. They joined an early May effort to convince the town to buy a 102-acre site known locally as the Tuckahoe Swamp. It is just north of the Shinnecock Hills Golf Club and drains into Bullhead Bay, one of the bays that feeds Peconic Bay. A subdivision application pending asks for permission to build 28 homes, clustered, with 62 acres set aside for a nature preserve. The town has inquired about buying the property. Members of the Nation were present partly as a protest to development taking place on 62 acres near their reservation, land the tribe claims as sacred. A lawsuit to block construction is unresolved, but a State Supreme Court justice ruled in April that arguments did not justify a preliminary injunction to block work - which already has taken place and makes it unlikely the project will be stopped.
