WASHINGTON, D.C. ? The Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources is scheduled to meet on May 7 to consider this year's wildfire season and the readiness capabilities of federal land management agencies to respond to similar blazes.
This corresponds with the U.S Attorney in southern New Mexico, Donald Iglesias, announcing the formation of an arson task force to investigate the Mescalero Fires. Indian Country Today reported on April 3 that investigators had initially determined those fires were deliberately set.
Iglesias said in the report that he has received typed arson threats against current Mescalero president Sara Misquez. The tribe has offered a $50,000 reward for information leading to an arrest for the fires.
