I am writing in reference to the article by Cliff Peale of the Cincinnati Enquirer and reprinted in the Pal-Item on Nov. 25. The Native Americans did not start the act of "scalping." It was started during the era of Andrew Jackson, who said "the only good Indian is a dead Indian." During that time a reward of $50 was given for every Native American killed. The scalp was provided as proof of the killing. The white man started the practice.
