Mary A. Balber, a member of the Ojibwe band, was among 17 Distinguished Alumni recognized by the Hamline University School of Law in St. Paul, Minn. They were nominated by their peers and selected by a faculty committee. Balber is a 1990 graduate of the school and a founding member who served two terms as president of the Minnesota American Indian Bar Association. She is a former board member for the National Native American Bar Association, Anishinabe Legal Services, the Indian Child Welfare Law Center and Ain Dah Yung Emergency Shelter. She served as an assistant attorney general under Attorneys General Hubert H. Humphrey III and Mike Hatch and was a family lawyer for the Southern Minnesota Regional Legal Services. The mother of two has been active in professional and community affairs.
