On November 28, a jury in Hackensack, New Jersey awarded more than $2.1 million to the family of a Ramapough Indian who was fatally shot five years ago in Makwah during a confrontation with a park ranger according to an article in The Record.

Emil Mann who had joined other American Indians in the state park on April 1, 2006 for a barbecue was shot and killed by Police Officer Chad Walder, who has since retired. Walder claimed it was in self-defense.
