Heading into the final quarter trailing 9-2, the Iroquois Nationals scored a whopping seven goals in a ferocious final period but ultimately came up short to arguably the toughest team in the tournament along with themselves, 11-9.
After last Friday's 24-2 drubbing of England, the Nationals, along with USA and Canada, were considered a good bet to bring home the gold. That they had to play Canada this early on, and not, say, in the finals, seems a peculiar a scheduling snafu (also consider that the Nationals, Canada and USA are all in the same division in this world tournament). Their next opponent is Australia.
Onondaga Community College superstar Randy Staats netted two goals for the Nationals in that climactic fourth, and Johnny Powless and Seth Oakes also added two goals each. The Nationals are now 1-1, the tournament continues, and we look forward to seeing what kind of mayhem they unleash on the Aussies after this tough loss.
