In professor Edward Valandra’s 400-level Sioux Country course, a student wrote how unsettling it was that in only 26 pages, they learned more about the Sioux people than in their entire previous education. Valandra, American Indian Studies chair, said the American Indian studies department carries the burden of the state’s history on their shoulders, a history that is too often misunderstood due to a systemic ignorance about American Indians.
