The late Jackie Mac Garnett was one of two Oklahoma firefighters who died last year in the line of duty who were recognized Oct. 8 during the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service in Emmitsburg, Md. Garnett, 54, was a member of the Quapaw Volunteer Fire Department. He died Nov. 20, 1999, as he was about to respond to a grass fire. An Air Force veteran and member of the Ottawa Indian tribe, Garnett worked for the Quapaw fire department for 14 years. Plaques around the monument bear names of 2,077 firefighters who died in the line of duty since 1981. Thirty-three are Oklahomans.
