Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe, Nevada

A fatal boating collision at Pyramid Lake 30 miles northeast of Reno occurred after a skipper became distracted by a group of pelicans on the water, officers said May 20. The Saturday accident at Separator Bay on the lake's west shore killed Loni Leisy, 40, Reno, and sent three people to the hospital. Tribal officer Wesley Hahn said a Bayliner boat rammed into a smaller Brendella ski boat from behind, then passed over the right side of the smaller vessel. Efforts to revive Leisy, a passenger in the smaller boat, failed. Hahn said passengers on both boats knew each other. The smaller boat stopped to put a skier in the water, the "driver in the bigger boat became distracted by pelicans a little offshore and failed to see the other boat stop," Hahn said. No citations were issued but the accident -during National Safe Boating Week - is under investigation. Alcohol and drugs have been ruled out as factors.
