The pueblo has been awarded a $131,200 housing block grant by the federal government, U.S. Rep. Tom Udall, D-N.M., announced Aug. 9. Two-thirds of the grant will help build 30 new homes at the northern New Mexico pueblo. The rest will go toward the renovation of existing homes. "Housing is an important need in the low income areas of my district, and I am gratified that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has stepped in to assist the tribal members of Pojoaque Pueblo," Udall said. Daryl Whitegeese, president of Pojoaque's housing authority, said the pueblo is trying to create a housing model that other pueblos in New Mexico will be able to follow. He said the official groundbreaking on the 30 new homes would be in the next few weeks once engineers complete their design.
