Police shot and killed a Native American man in North Dakota who allegedly refused to drop a knife, according to reports. Ivan Wilson-Dragswolf, 24, was shot by officers in Mandan after they responded to a domestic dispute on the city’s northeast side on April 14, the Associated Press reported.

Police said they shot Dragswolf after he made an aggressive motion toward them with a knife in hand. Dragswolf was pronounced dead at the scene, the AP reported. Three officers involved in the shooting were placed on administrative leave.

According to his obituary, Dragswolf was a U.S. Marine and a graduate of New Town High School in New Town, North Dakota. Dragswolf served a tour in Afghanistan, Indian Country Media Network contributor Ruth Hopkins posted on Facebook.

A study released in 2014 found that Native Americans are most likely to be killed by police. “Native Americans, 0.8 percent of the population, comprise 1.9 percent of police killings,” the study reads.

The Counted, a tabulation of all police killings in the U.S., found that the shooting deaths of Native Americans by law enforcement increased between 2015 and 2016. An estimated 13 Native Americans were shot and killed by police in 2015 whereas an estimated 24 were killed in 2016, The Counted reported.

In October, a Native American mother of three who suffered from depression was shot and killed by police. Renee Davis, 23, died after King’s Country Sheriff’s shot her on the Muckleshoot Indian Reservation in Washington state. A media relations officer for the sheriffs department said Davis was armed when police shot her.

Several of Davis’s children were at home during the shooting, Colorlines reported. Davis was pregnant at the time of her death.

Dragswolf’s funeral was held on April 20. He is buried at Shell Creek Congregational Cemetery in New Town.

MLK wasn't just about Black rights - he was about HUMAN rights...no matter what color you are. And that's what we ALL have to wrap our heads around. White people gotta wake up and see that we've ALL been duped. The "white race" was INVENTED by the old white guys club to keep us fearful of non-whites and keep us from joining together with ALL races for our God-given HUMAN rights. Underneath it all, it's not about black and white or cowboys and indians. It's about keeping the financially privileged class in power and pretending the rest of us can achieve the American Dream, too - if we just work hard enough.

I am a child of the '60s...grew up in the '70s. Vietnam started when I was in the first grade and the last US troops finally came home the year I graduated (1975). I remember the war protests, the civil rights marches, the riots and looting. It was on TV every night while I ate supper. But I was too young to say anything, let alone feel empowered to do anything. And I regret that I let that feeling of helplessness overpower me for most of my life.

So proud of our young people today, rising up with ONE VOICE no matter what color they are...very impressed to see our youth taking a stand, and I want you to know that this baby-boomer white woman stands with you.

I posted today about why when a black criminal gets killed the media goes crazy and people get outraged. But when natives get gunned down by police you don't hear anything. Only on Indian country today why my brothers and sisters why. I was called a racist for pointing this out. A'HO

Please don't trash blacks for wanting equality. Join them in peaceful protest. Nothing makes cons happier than seeing us fight amongst ourselves. Remember, the enemy of my enemy is my friend.

After reading the comments, I lost my sympathy. I was always aware that Indians thought they were white and looked down on black people but figured I'd give it a shot. You lazy drunkasses sit and complain and yet won't even defend your own people but bitch at black people for doing so. Worthless pieces of shit..keep getting gunned down and complain about black while the white man uses you for target practice you pathetic cowards

The simple fact is the Blacks have been protected by laws in this nation the longest. That every other Special group has yelled to be covered by the same laws since.
Pedophiles and sex offenders are now falling in line after the LGBTQ.
Now the real simple fact is as long as people keep blaming others for things in most cases weren't even a live for well that is how it is .
Now I hear on here how people are not to believe the writings of natives that don't meet the stories of others.
Reminds me of the stories of the Apache who say they were punished for tribes they never heard of in North.
Or the group that starts their tour over a war field with statements to the groups that you have understand it was a different time and different beliefs. Seems that there is reasons when people want them to cover their side and that is for all races.
Now here is some facts. Free blacks in South became very rich owning and selling slaves before the war as well as to it's end.
South Carolina lists that Free Blacks owned more land and more businesses and MORE SLAVES then Whites in the states.
Free blacks owned slaves ,land and businesses in every state in South.
That when whites stopped all breeding for sale as being cruel some blacks did not stop the practice.
And of course we know of at least one large tribe that part of their treaty was to keep and move with their slaves.
The fact is there have been slaves since the start of time . Native history has not only slavery but the murder of other tribes long before Chris was in the picture. And Africa was no different from the start.
And of course there are nations even now who steal humans to use as slaves.
That it for the most part but is all about power.
Now it is 13% want to rule the other 87% which will sooner or later start a fight that the 13% can't win. That is why they refuse to put things up to the people to vote on and just run to court whining I Want and Give Me.
Now while I hear all this White this and white that the fact is there is not one single law on books that protect a white hederalsexual anywhere in this country. Hell you can't use white to anything without being labaled racist or supremacist. You are not even allowed to be proud to be white of any kind.
And as you hear even here hating the white line in your blood is the thing to do even as for most it is now 50/50 and some a lot more white then native.

Whatever happened to shooting an arm or a leg to make them fall instead of shooting to death?

Black woman here. #1 Black Lives Matter. #2 Black trans lives matter. #3. When Black lives matter, ALL lives will matters.
I have not spent my last I don't know how many days in quarantine attending webinars, reading, unlearning and reintegrating new information, beginning every single webinar and meeting I lead with a land acknowledgement that has gotten more and more personal for me for nothing. The Black population does not have sovereignty rules. Tell us how we can help you.

Tragic that someone who served our country had his life ended by someone who also serves our country. In an ideal world we should all be on the same team. That said, the police were facing an angry man with a deadly weapon - and not just any man, but a man who trained and served in what is highly regarded as one of the most awesome fighting forces in the world. If anyone, race, color, nationality or creed threatens police with a deadly weapon (including not dropping it when told to do so) they should not be surprised if they are met with deadly force in response. That is the law. When the police tell you to drop your weapon you need to do it. Yes there are bad actors who should never have been hired by the police force... and ones who should be locked up for killing unarmed men. Honestly ... growing up watching movies when someone pulls a gun or a knife on an officer everyone knows what happens next. Does anyone really think if this guy was a white marine in a domestic dispute that the cops would have not shot the guy who refused to yield? Everyone knows are the biggest source of crimes of passion is domestic disputes. What about the woman who called 911 and the fact that the police risked their lives to respond to a call for help. Where were the neighbors when this woman was forced to call 911? Do you think self policing would work in such a situation. Look I am all for justice and equal treatment - being a minority myself - but when people grab at police actions that were justified and try to lump them into a “me too” style rant the it just dilutes the value and potency of the real stories that were not justified. Sorry to say but an ex marine (aka trained killing machine) who is passionately violent and holding a deadly weapon is not the same as an armed officer with his knee on the neck of an unarmed man.
