Two U.S. representatives from Alabama introduced legislation Oct. 18 to prohibit the band from building a casino on historic land near Wetumpka. The bill by Reps. Bob Riley of Ashland and Terry Everett of Enterprise states that since the tribal land was purchased with a $165,000 federal grant, the tribe must abide by terms set forth in the original grant application to protect the land and prevent development. The land, known as Hickory Ground, was the governmental center of the Creek nation before the forced removal of the tribe in the 1830s. The band has worked with Harrah's to try to build a casino on the land, but has encountered opposition from a string of Alabama governors and members of the state's congressional delegation.
