Nuvista Light and Electric Names New Energy Director

Elaine “Chicky” Samuelson-Brown beat out candidates nationwide for the energy director and general manager position at Nuvista Light and Electric Cooperative.

Brown will lead, coordinate and develop a region-wide alternative energy plan. Nuvista is currently spearheading the Chikuminuk Lake Hydropower Project, which will provide the electrical energy needs for Bethel, Alaska and about a dozen other area villages for the next 20 years.

A Calista Corporation shareholder from Bethel, Brown has extensive experience in the Yukon Kuskokwim region of the state. She served as the president and chief executive officer of NorthStar Gas LLC from 2004 to 2011, and prior to that served as their chief financial officer and vice president of finance since 1998. At NorthStar Gas, Brown oversaw the successful design and construction of the region’s newest fuel and deck cargo barge. Brown also assisted with the Association of Village Council Presidents and Calista Region last Biennial Energy Plan.

Brown is a University Anchorage Kiwanis Club board member and a member of the Resource Development Council, Alaska Support Industry Alliance, American Management Association and others. Brown is also a Bethel Native Corporation shareholder.
