I was disappointed that President Barack Obama mentioned so little about the plight of the First Americans (while the world was watching) in his inaugural speech on Jan. 20. Everything was about the plight of the African Americans. I was hoping he would recognize the ongoing oppression of the First Americans.
America will not be renewed until the struggle of the First Americans is acknowledged.
America will not be renewed until the First Americans get seated in their rightful place in history.
America will not be renewed until the First Americans are acknowledged for the years of oppression at the hands of the United States of America.
On the flip side of this renewal process that President Obama talks about is that Native America will not be renewed if we keep operating under a constitution that was drafted by the U.S. War Department. A message to Native Leaders in America: please pray and pass this message onto President Obama.
The “urgency of now” that Martin Luther King Jr. mentioned some 40 years ago has long passed Native America. It is not too late to start the renewal and healing process for the future of Native America and her children.
