On August 22, Navajo Nation President Ben Shelly announced his appointment of Laphillda Tso as the new communications director for the Navajo Nation President and Vice President’s Office. Tso formerly served as the public information officer for the Navajo Nation Speaker’s Office and the Navajo Housing Authority.

A seven-year veteran to the public relations and advertising field, Tso attended Dine College and later earned her her bachelor’s of science degree in advertising and public relations from Northern Arizona University (NAU) in 2008.

Prior to working for Shelly and Vice President Rex Lee Jim, Tso served as the public information officer for the Navajo Nation's Honorable Speaker Lawrence T. Morgan (Iyanbito/Pinedale).

Tso has also worked with the Northern Arizona University Office of Student Financial Aid as its communication specialist (2005 through late 2006). She started work as the public information officer for the Navajo Housing Authority soon after her 2008 graduation.

“Ms. Tso is an asset to our office because it is important the Nation have a spokeswoman of her experience who can communicate with our grandmas, grandpas and who can work with regional, state and national media operations,” President Shelly said in a statement.

“I humbly accept the job and respect President Shelly’s platform,” said Laphillda in the press release she mailed to media outlets on August 22. “As the communications director, there are more challenges to come and with the power of knowledge, prayer and kindness, I will represent the Navajo Nation with the utmost respect and be a role model for the Navajo people.”
