Theresa Smokey Jackson was born on July 1, 1916, in Minden to Washoe tribe natives William and Sadie Joe Smokey. Times were changing for the Washoe people as they left their traditional lives of hunting, fishing and gathering for new lives working as laborers on nearby farms and ranches. Eventually, the Smokey family moved to the Dresslerville Washoe Indian Colony, where Theresa attended the elementary school built for Washoe native children and learned to speak English.
