Today will become a date in history for the Navajo Nation, as tribal leaders along with U.S. Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewel, Assistant Secretary – Indian Affairs Kevin K. Washburn, and Sam Hirsch, Acting Assistant Attorney General for the Environment and Natural Resources Division, U.S. Department of Justice will hold a press conference and signing ceremony for a $554 million settlement to fulfill federal trust obligations.

The settlement came as part of the Obama Administration’s commitment to strengthen the government-to-government relationship. In proceeding with the settlement, the administration settled a long-standing lawsuit over mismanaged trust funds that dated back to 1946 as ICTMN reported in June.
