The tribe has received $645,000 in federal funds through the Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented Police Services (COPS). The tribe plans to hire two more officers and buy equipment for the department. Police Chief Robert Kenahan said the tribe applied for two grants. The first, worth $238,000, was for Tribal Natural Resources and would help the tribe hire one officer plus buy equipment. The second, $407,000, would help hire and equip two additional officers. At present the department consists of the chief, two supervising officers, a dispatcher and the three newest officers sworn in during March. It hired its first full-time officer in February 1998.
