Muscogee (Creek) Nation Welcomes Iroquois Nationals in Historic Meeting

The Muscogee (Creek) Nation will welcome ambassadors of the Iroquois Nationals lacrosse organization to Creek Country from February 16 to 18. The Iroquois and Muscogee cultures share a special bond through the related sports of lacrosse and Muscogee "stickball." Both of these games have deep roots in their respective cultures and are the oldest stick-and-ball games in North America.

Four representatives from the Nationals will make a presentation to the Muscogee (Creek) Nation on February 16 at 6:30 p.m. The event, which is open to the public, will be an informational discussion about the 2015 World Indoor Lacrosse Championships, to be hosted by the Iroquois on Onondaga lands in New York state. According to a Muscogee press release, this will be the first time an internationally sanctioned sporting event will be held on indigenous lands. The Nationals delegation will highlight the similarities between lacrosse and stickball during their presentation, as well as work to foster a strong relationshiop between the two tribal nations. Nike N7 is cosponsoring the event.

The highlight of the weekend, though, will be an exhibition stickball game on February 18 at the Muscogee Nation's tribal complex in Okmulgee between the Nationals and members of the Muscogee Nation. This will be the first time this sort of cultural exchange has happened in Oklahoma, according to the Muscogee press release.
