Mrs. Universe Ashley Callingbull and her father Joel (Enoch Cree Nation) are the first-ever indigenous team to compete on the fourth season of CTV Television’s The Amazing Race Canada.
Ashley Callingbull is the current Mrs. Universe, and is both the first Canadian and the first, First Nations woman to win the title.
The Amazing Race Canada program is a television reality show in which a set of 12 teams compete against each other in a race traversing numerous cities in Canada. The teams must also solve riddles, take on miscellaneous challenges and win the race in order to win two new cars, cash and prizes.
Last years winner’s received $250,000 in cash, two cars and a lifetime of free gas.
Joel and Ashley Callingbull are stepfather and stepdaughter. They say they want to represent their Nation and their communities and want to win The Amazing Race Canada. They hope their presence will be a positive influence on First Nations people.
The duo also says any of their winnings will be taken home to their reserve and used to help their friends and family.
As stated on The Amazing Race Canada website: Joel and Ashley are a fun-loving, hardworking father/daughter team who are proud members of Enoch Cree Nation. Since winning the title, she has become a voice for First Nations issues in Canada, particularly in urging her community to vote in last year’s federal election.
In 2010, when Ashley Callingbull grabbed national attention by finishing second runner-up in the Miss Universe Canada pageant. She became an ambassador and advocate, for causes including Stollery Children’s Hospital, Walk for the Cure and Run for the Lung. She also landed a recurring role on the acclaimed APTN series Blackstone. Today, she’s an in-demand motivational speaker.
“I’m not surprised by Ashley’s influence and outspokenness,” says Joel. “I always knew that she would become someone important and influential.”
