A Texas man has died on the slopes of Ski Apache, the second fatality this month at the resort operated by the tribe. Doke Hobbs, 35, Midland, Texas, hit a tree Feb. 17 on an intermediate run, authorities said. Jeffery Nance, 33, Baytown, Texas, was killed Feb. 11 when he hit a tree on an expert run at the resort. "Both involved skiing out of control and leaving the trail and hitting a tree," resort general manager Roy Parker said. "In both cases, that's the common denominator." The southern New Mexico ski resort is near Ruidoso. Lincoln County sheriff's deputies handled the investigations. Hobbs was at the resort with family and friends and was coming off an intermediate trail known as Meadows Trail when he lost control, lost a ski and hit a tree, sheriff's Sgt. Jackie Raines said. Raines said in the first accident, Nance came off one ski trail onto another and tried to go back to the first trail. He was "just skiing too fast and lost his ski and hit a tree," Raines said.
