Diversity efforts recognized by the National Association of Women Business Owners
LAS VEGAS - Lorrinda Gray-Davis, director of diversity for Perini Building Co., received the 2008 Women of Distinction Award from the National Association of Women Business Owners (R), Southern Nevada Chapter. Gray-Davis was recognized for her leadership role in promoting diversity initiatives in the construction industry.
NAWBO assists women-owned businesses by sharing resources and providing a unified effort to shape economic and public policy. It is the only dues-based national organization representing the interests of all women entrepreneurs across all industries.
Under Gray-Davis; leadership, Perini has emerged as a leader in diversity initiatives with one of the most comprehensive agendas in the construction industry. Gray-Davis is responsible for developing and overseeing company policies that increase employment opportunities for minority- and women-owned businesses on Perini's construction projects, including a national effort to inform vendors and subcontractors about project opportunities. She has developed comprehensive workshops that educate subcontractors about working on large-scale construction projects and has been instrumental in initiating programs that help subcontractors succeed on the job, such as Perini's mentoring program that partners its key subcontractors with less-experienced firms.
The most comprehensive diversity effort Perini has in place is with MGM Mirage on CityCenter, an urban development project in Las Vegas. CityCenter is the largest privately funded construction project in the country and has one of the most aggressive private diversity initiatives.
Other Perini jobs that have formal diversity programs are the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in Maryland, the Sheraton Phoenix Downtown Hotel in Arizona and Foxwoods Resort Casino in Connecticut. Internally, Perini sets diversity goals on all projects regardless of those set by owners. Gray-Davis oversees all projects to ensure that diversity efforts and goals are in place and being met.
According to Dick Rizzo, vice chairman of Perini Building Co., ''Lorrinda has developed a diversity program that is not only successful but is a model for other companies to implement. Through innovative educational programs and strategic alliances with other organizations, such as financial institutions, our diversity program has provided economic opportunities for vendors and subcontractors on our construction projects. In addition, the experience gained at Perini will assist companies with future project opportunities as well.''
Gray-Davis chairs the board of directors for the Grand Canyon Minority Supplier Development Council. She is board secretary for the Arizona Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and serves on the board of directors for the Women's Business Enterprise Council (regionally) and the Associated Minority Contractors of America. In 2004, she was appointed to Arizona's Equity in State Contracting Commission.
Most recently, Gray-Davis received the Azteca Award from the U.S. Hispanic Contractors Association. This national award is presented to individuals who are dedicated to providing economic opportunities for Hispanic contractors.
Other awards include Corporate Advocate of the Year: Perini Building Co. from the Arizona Minority Business Enterprise Center, Minority Business Advocate Award from the Arizona Minority Enterprise Business Enterprise Center, Minority Business Advocate Award from the Greater Los Angeles African American Chamber of Commerce, and Corporate Partner 2006 - 07 from the American Indian Chamber of Commerce.
