The village of Baraga temporarily backed off a proposed agreement with the Keweenaw Bay Indian community that would transfer tribal land to the village. The village council had planned to approve the transfer but delayed action because of last-minute contract changes. The proposed transfer involves The Pines, a strip of land along the U.S. 41 corridor in northern Baraga County. Village members expect to approve the transfer later this month, pending a review of the revised contract. 'It sounds like it's just textual stuff,'' Village Manager Thomas Chatel said.
