Kanatiio Adams, 18-Year-Old Mohawk Student Athlete, Walks On

In tragic, saddening news, Kanatiio “Tiio” Adams, 18, a senior from Salisbury Prep School in Connecticut, passed away on Monday, January 2, 2012 at Akwesasne Mohawk territory.

Born on August 19, 1993 in Cornwall, Kanatiio was the son of Amanda Adams and the late Cory L. White.

Kanatiio was a phenomenal athlete who loved to play hockey and lacrosse, and who racked up trophies and awards throughout the years. His accolades on the ice included winning the Little NHL Title with his Hotshot Teammates, as well as playing on the Akwesasne Minor Hockey team that claimed the Eastern ODMHA hockey title.

On the lacrosse field, Kanatiio excelled for the Akwesasne Junior A Indians, and was recently selected to the prestigious U19 Iroquois Nationals Lacrosse Team. He was awarded the All-Canadian Defender in Lacrosse at the Canadian National U16 nationals. He also won the Dick’s Tournament of Champions with Krunch Lacrosse. Kanatiio was also a member of the Salmon River Shamrocks Section 10 championship in lacrosse.

As stated on the Donaldson Funeral Home page, “every person that had the privilege to play sports with Tiio had the oppurtunity to play with a special young man that always had an impact in their lives.”

Kanatiio had recently been accepted at Cornell University with full financial aide to play lacrosse for the Big Red of Cornell University.

Kanatiio was a budding carpenter that proudly recently built his grandmother’s beautiful dock.

He passed very unexpectedly and tragically, leaving his family stunned.

Kanatiio will be missed by his mother and father, Amanda and Thomas Smart of Snye; brothers, Ratsienhahiens, Myan , Rylan and Dash; his grandparents, Sally Ann Adams of Snye; Carl and Carol White of St. Regis; Donald and Debbie Smart of Uba, California; his godparents, Christopher and Shari Adams.

He will also be missed by his aunts and uncles, Michelle and Michael Laffin of Snye; Joseph Adams and companion Teresa Sharrow of Snye; Paul and Renee Adams of Cornwall Island; Christopher and Shari Adams of Snye; Mike and Rhonda Adams of Cornwall Island; John Adams and his companion, Reanne Rourke of Snye; Daylan Adams of Snye; Shannon Lazore of Snye; Kevin Smart and his companion, Amy McDonald; his adopted aunt and uncle, Dwight and Becky Bero of Akwesasne; and many cousins.

He was predeceased by his father, Cory L. White on October 15, 2002 and his maternal grandfather, Morris Adams on October 27, 2008.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at the St. Regis Catholic Church with Rev. Jerome Pastores, celebrating.
