For the first time, a U.S. Secretary of the Interior will deliver the commencement address at Haskell Indian Nations University.
On May 8, Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell will do just that at the 2015 graduation ceremony. Haskell will be celebrating its “130th year of providing education and opportunity to Native American communities nationwide,” says a press release announcing the commencement.
As Secretary of the Interior, Jewell upholds trust responsibilities to the 566 federally recognized tribes, and serves as the chair of the White House Council on Native American Affairs.
The commencement will take place on May 8 at 12 noon at the Haskell Indian Nations University Coffin Sports Complex, 155 E. Indian Avenue, in Lawrence, Kansas.
