Lawmakers are moving forward with a plan to pay thousands of Indians across the country a total of $3.4 billion to settle a long-running class-action lawsuit over the federal mismanagement of tribal lands held in trust by the federal government. The lawsuit, which has been a divisive issue in Indian country, was brought more than a decade ago by Elouise Cobell of the Blackfeet Indian Tribe in Montana.
