Indian Health Service Offers Student Opportunities

From a scholarship program to an Extern Program and residencies, the Indian Health Service has a number of student opportunities in Indian health.

“If you have ever considered a career in health care, we invite you to explore and discover a comprehensive array of student opportunities in Indian health,” says the IHS student opportunities website. “If you have the motivation and the desire to pursue an Indian health career, we have the road map to achieve it.”

The IHS Scholarship Program began in 1977 and has supported thousands of American Indian and Alaska Native students in their journey for a degree in the health professions. For more information, visit the IHS Scholarship Program website or contact the office at 301-443-6197 for an application.

The IHS Extern Program offers IHS scholarship recipients, as well as other health students, an opportunity to gain clinical experience in an Indian health facility. The IHS Externship Program offers a cultural pre-professional experience. For more information call 301-443-6197.

IHS also offers residencies and rotations through a number of health professions schools throughout the United States. The IHS has agreements with the schools, which provide clinical and cultural experiences within Indian communities and can lay foundations for a career in Indian health.

IHS also offers grant programs to train more American Indian and Alaska Native health professionals to serve in Indian health programs.

The American Indians into Nursing Program seeks to increase the number of nurses, midwives, and nurse practitioners who serve Indian communities.

The American Indians into Psychology Program was started because there is a need for trained clinical psychologists of American Indian and Alaska Native descent. Scholarships are available.

The IHS offers the American Indians into Medicine Program, which offers support for American Indian and Alaska Native college students pursuing health care degrees. This program offers career counseling, tutoring, scholarship and financial aid application assistance.

The Association of American Indian Physicians aims to identify, recruit, mentor and prepare American Indian and Alaska Native college students for careers in medicine and other health professions.
