Getting ready for pow wow season is like getting ready for summer. The season ushers in the desire to travel closer to the ones we love.

But, it’s also about enjoying each other’s company, and partaking in the summer activities! At the Mitaanjigamiing First Nation pow wow, which starts Friday, the event calls for attendees to race canoes, a festive way to beckon summer. And laying out on the beach is rather luxurious, but it can also be an activity, especially if it involves catching rays and Traditional dancing. Well, the 19th Intertribal San Luis Rey Band of Mission Indians Pow Wow is in Oceanside, Calif., and that location just screams “beach-dancing.”

As we celebrate the last weekend of spring, take a look at the pow wows going on this weekend, as an ode to summer.
