As the winner, Bolling received $15,000 and a sterling silver trophy. Ruben Bolling and Two Bulls received their prizes on March 29th in a ceremony at the Library of Congress. John Lewis, the U.S. Representative for Georgia's 5th congressional district, delivered the annual Herblock Lecture at the awards ceremony.

Marty Two Bulls Sr. is a freelance editorial cartoonist who has drawn for the Indian Country Today Media Network since 2001.

During his lecture, civil-rights icon and former freedom rider Rep John Lewis told the audience, “Each cartoon is like an essay of history...We have to be smart enough to look into the future, and gutsy enough to take it on.”

He told journalists of color, “Just keep fighting.” And that all races, Mexican American, Black and Native American, all need to come together.

Marty Two Bulls said he was proud to win the award, and even prouder to be representing Indian country, and looked forward to creatiing more exposure for Indian country issues.

Fiore commented in a release, “The cartoons of Marty Two Bulls, Sr. take a hard-hitting look at issues impacting native peoples. His bold style screams with powerful messages that have been overlooked by much of society. Two Bulls’ strong work exemplifies a courage and ferocity that is the lifeblood of a good political cartoon.”

Herb Block was among the world’s best known and most admired political cartoonists over a 70 year career fighting against abuses by the powerful.

The Herb Block Foundation says they are “committed to defending the basic freedoms guaranteed all Americans, combating all forms of discrimination and prejudice and improving the conditions of the poor and underprivileged through the creation or support of charitable and educational programs with the same goals.”

The Foundation also says they are committed to providing educational opportunity to deserving students through post-secondary education scholarships and to promoting editorial cartooning through continued research. All efforts of the Foundation shall be in keeping with the spirit of Herblock, America's great cartoonist in his life long fight against abuses by the powerful.
