Genealogy Sites Remove Social Security Numbers

Two popular genealogy websites have removed full Social Security numbers from their websites.

According to a story by Scripps Howard News Service, stop listing the numbers “in response to people’s concerns about privacy,” said Daniel Jones, vice president of consumer products for, which owns “Two people who were living contacted us to say they were concerned that their private information was exposed. That’s when we made the decision.”

According to that story, Scripps Howard discovered 31,931 Americans falsely listed as deceased due to data entry errors.

NBC4 reported on the Thomas family in May 2011 after their infant Samantha died in 2010, someone had been using her Social Security number on their taxes. This incident led to removing the numbers from their site.
