If you're in the Washington, DC area during the month of January, make sure you stop by the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian to see an exceedingly entertaining documentary on Native Americans on film. Director Neil Diamond's acclaimed and award-winning Reel Injun will be screening for free, twice daily, throughout the month. The film explores the strange and often ridiculous nature of portrayal of Indians on film, and features candid and often quite funny interviews with Clint Eastwood, Jim Jarmusch, Graham Greene, Adam Beach, Wes Studi, Russell Means, Sacheen Littlefeather, John Trudell and Zacharias Kunuk. If you've ever felt less-than-satisfied with Native American characters in classic westerns (in other words, if you have ever seen a classic western that featured Indians), you'll find this film highly entertaining. Screenings are at 12:30 and 3:30 daily at the NMAI's Rasmuson Theater. Visit the NMAI events page for more information.
