District Judge Ellen Huvelle handed out a sentence just shy of what prosecutors were looking for on Friday.
Michael Scanlon, a business partner of disgraced former lobbyist Jack Abramoff, was sentenced to 20 months in federal prison for his role in the scandal that helped bring down former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-Texas), Politico reported. Prosecutors had asked the judge for a two-year sentence.
The sentencing came citing Scanlon’s “extraordinary” cooperation, and includes and three years of supervised release. Scanlon was the first government cooperator in a public corruption probe that has netted 20 guilty pleas or convictions, LegalTimes reported.
