Focus on Latin indigenous

I wanted to mention how much I appreciated the two articles on indigenous peoples in Peru by Jose Barreiro and Renzo Pipoli in the Sept. 2, 2009 issue of Indian Country Today.

I thought both of these articles were excellent and it is important to continue similar articles on the situation of indigenous peoples in Peru and other Latin American countries. Many of these indigenous communities, although recognized by their governments often face problems in terms of both poverty and invasion of their lands by outsiders. There is also alot of migration of these indigenous peoples out of their communities both to the urban areas in their countries and also internationally, including to here in the United States and to Europe.

The indigenous situation in Peru and other Latin American countries will be important to take into account if the OAS Draft Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples is approved this year.
