Fighting Sioux name is treated with respect

On July 18, 1969, a group of Native Americans, under the leadership of Chief Standing Crow and Chief White Buffalo Man, grandson of Sitting Bull, met at the University of North Dakota to adopt UND President George Starcher into the Standing Rock Sioux tribe and to grant the UND sports teams the right to use the nickname, “The Fighting Sioux.”
