Famed golf course design firm to develop Seneca project

CANASTOTA, N.Y. ñ World-renowned golf course design firm Robert Trent Jones II Golf Course Architects has been chosen to develop the Seneca Nationís 18-hole championship level golf course.

Seneca Niagara Casino and Hotel representatives announced earlier this year that the nation had purchased 257 acres of land in the western New York town of Lewiston for the development of the course. After a search for architects, the nation announced June 26 that they selected the Robert Trent Jones II firm for the job.

ìWe are very excited to be working with the Senecas on this project,î said Jim Simonini, associate director of business development for Robert Trent Jones II.

The firm has designed more than 230 courses in 38 countries, including the Kaluhyat Golf Club at the Turning Stone Resort and Casino in New York and the Pueblo de Cochiti Golf Course in New Mexico.

ìWe work with the land when we are designing a course,î Simonini said. ìWe donít try to force a design style to the site. We want to disturb as little of the land as possible and we try to make the course as natural as possible.î

Seneca Niagara Falls Gaming Corp. officials said in a press release that they envision a high-end facility that will attract significant play from outside the local area and could host professional events.

ìThe course will be designed to provide a fun game for every golfer and it will also challenge even the best players,î Simonini said.

The Senecas expect to spend $10 million to $15 million on the project. Simonini said the course is in the beginning conceptual stages and is expected to open in 2008.

ìWe spend a great deal of time on each site,î he said. ìWe try to protect the land and preserve the land, while creating a course that challenges every shot.î
