FALLON, Nev. ? On March 14, the Fallon Paiute-Shoshone Tribe announced it reached a settlement in a lawsuit brought against it by the Churchill County Board of County Commissioners.
The county dropped its appeal to a federal District Court decision that granted the tribe the ability to use money from its settlement fund to reacquire territory and water rights and add the new territory to its trust lands.
The settlement prevents the county from further interfering with the tribe legally acquiring land at a pre-determined rate, but established improved channels of communication between the tribe and the county.
"We believe that the above terms will lead to a very positive and mutually respectful relationship between the tribe and the county," said Donna Cossette, tribal chairperson.
