(From top) Santa Fe Indian School senior Steven Johnson, Navajo, prepared for the 3,200-meter race - a grueling eight laps around the Great Friends of University of New Mexico Track in Albuquerque, N.M. - during the Class 3A-5A Track and Field Championships held May 11 - 12.

Johnson finished the 800-meter race well ahead of the other runners. He stopped the clock at 1.58.15, setting a personal record.

Johnson's sharp focus helped him become the defending New Mexico state champion in the 800-, 1,600- and 3,200-meter races.

Johnson accepted the gold medal for the 800-meter race. He nearly broke the state record of 1.55.32 that was set in 2001.
