Ex-Cherokee chief Mankiller diagnosed with cancer

Former Principal Chief Wilma Mankiller, one of the few women ever to lead a major American Indian tribe, has been diagnosed with advanced pancreatic cancer, her husband said March 2. Charlie Soap, Mankiller’s husband and Cherokee Nation Community Services group leader, made the announcement in a March 2 news release. In it, Soap and the 64-year-old Mankiller wrote that she has stage 4 metastatic pancreatic cancer but gave no other details.
