Indian Country Today bids farewell to its veteran staff reporter, David Melmer, who retired at the end of 2007. A passionate journalist who served Indian country for 14 years, Melmer covered the Northern Plains region with a keen interest in telling the peoples; stories with compassion and wit. As a former managing editor of ICT during its South Dakota years, Melmer worked to give readers a fair and accurate look into the lives of Native people, refusing stereotypes and prejudices that still appear in mainstream reporting today. His work as a senior staff reporter since 2001, when ICT headquarters moved to New York, is well-respected in Indian country and throughout the nation, and has influenced a generation of young journalists. The South Dakota native proved adept at feature writing as well, contributing entertaining but informative stories to each of ICT's quarterly magazines. His final story, ''Uranium battle at Pine Ridge contaminates politics,'' appears in this issue.
We wish Melmer all the best as he travels new paths.
