Members of the tribe joined more than 3,000 other volunteers in a Sept. 24 "Walk to Cure Diabetes" which benefits the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation and the Diabetes Research Foundation. "This is a disease that affects everyone, but especially Native Americans, and we have committed to helping research efforts find a cure," Vice Chairman Mark Sebastian explained. In 1999, more than 160 major walk-a-thons across the United States raised $57 million for research. Officials said 80 cents out of every dollar raised goes into research. With contributions from the Eastern Pequots, Connecticut's JDF raised more than $330,000 this year.
