DOI turns to tribes for advice on ruling

Dozens of Native American tribal leaders have urged federal officials to rectify the Supreme Court’s decision in Carcieri v. Salazar, saying the ruling threatens the rights of all tribes to have land taken into trust for them. The input of the Indian leaders came at the request of the U.S. Department of the Interior, which is preparing a position paper on the controversial decision to present to the department’s new secretary, Ken Salazar.
