Actress Vanessa Hudgens (High School Musical, Spring Breakers, Grease Live) has agreed to pay a $1,000 fine after she and her rumored boyfriend Austin Butler had carved a Valentine’s Day message on the rock formations at the Coconino National Forest in Sedona, Arizona and posted the photos to Instagram.
instagram Actress Vanessa Hudgens (High School Musical, Spring Breakers, Grease Live) and her rumored boyfriend Austin Butler were under serious fire earlier this year after posting a Valentine’s Day message on the Rock formations at the Coconino National Forest in Sedona, Arizona.
Hudgens received a misdemeanor citation for “damaging a natural feature on protected land.” Though she paid $1,000, the misdemeanor could have been punishable for up to six months in jail and a fine of $5,000.
According to the Associated Press, the agreement for Hudgens to pay the $1,000 was reached on April 19th and the fine was used by a volunteer group ‘Friends of the Forest’ to restore the wall, which usually is done by scrubbing or sanding.
The AP also reported that Hudgens admitted to using a rock to make the heart and gave authorities information on where to find the message. Forest Service employees found the scrawled heart matching the description around Feb. 23 on the formation known as Bell Rock.
Coconino National Forest Service spokesman Brady Smith told the AP that a good deal of visitors' vandalism goes unpunished, and that Hudgens' celebrity led to her being caught and fined.
"She was caught in the act because she publicized it and she's famous," Smith said. "I'm sure there are others who are not famous and publicized it and we've never known."
Neither Hudgens nor her representatives responded to ICTMN for requests for comment.
