They established their current home, north of Elton, Louisana, in 1975. In 1985, the Coushatta elected the members of their first tribal government. Ten years after that ,the Coushatta Casino Resort in Kinder, Louisiana, was born. Featuring 100,000 square feet of gaming floor options, more than 500 luxury hotel rooms, an RV resort, six restaurants and venues for live entertainment, the resort is the pinnacle of the Coushatta economy and employs more than 2,600 people. After years of setbacks, the Coushatta can now say “congratulations” to one another in their own language, considered one of the few Native American languages to have survived in its purest form.
Today the Coushatta are made up of seven big families, referred to as “clans.” They own and operate the casino and resort, creating an environment of a family-built resort environment that showcases the influences of their tribal heritage and history.
Grammy nominee and country music star Dierks Bentley will be performing at the The Pavillion at Coushatta at 8 pm. on March 12th.
The Coushatta Tribe recently broke ground on the resort’s latest expansion—a seven story, 401-room hotel with a bar, cafe, and retail shop—which will be connected to the casino, a few steps from the casino floor. This will expand the entire Coushatta Casino Resort capacity to 950 rooms, and will create new employment opportunities. The hotel is slated for a 2012 opening.
