Congratulations Ciara Jackson Maspee Pow Wow Princess!

Last week July 3rd, 20 year old Ciara Jackson from Mashpee was crowned as the 2016-2017 Pow Wow Princess at the Mashpee Wampanoag Pow Wow celebration at the Cape Cod Fairgrounds in Falmouth, Mass.

In an email to ICTMN, Jackson explained how she felt being named Pow Wow Princess.

“I am a proud member of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe and hail from the Bear Clan. I am a 2014 graduate of Falmouth High School and currently pursuing a degree in criminal justice. I currently serve as the Chairwoman of the Mashpee Wampanoag Youth Council while holding a full time job as a security guard.

“I am a firm believer in making our world a better place. I am dedicated to my community and the youth of Indian country. I believe I am a natural born leader who leads by example.

“I am honored to be the 2016 Mashpee Wampanoag Pow Wow princess. I will stand for my people and use my voice and my knowledge to represent my tribe for many years to come.”

According to the Mashpee tribe, to be considered as a candidate for “Mashpee Pow Wow Princess,” a candidate must be between the ages of 16 and 21, be active in her community, have a strong knowledge of her tribe’s history and culture and have participated in other pow wows, particularly through dance.
