Anyone who continues to engage in Columbus Day celebrations condones racism, slavery and genocide. Although it remains a federal holiday, there are 17 states that abstain from recognizing this day for a man who is unworthy. There will be a day, I am sure, when the U.S. government will come to its senses and see that Columbus Day rubs salt in the wounds of anyone whose ancestors' lands were stolen, lives taken, or were forced into slavery. When the United States finally comes to that realization and puts an end to the Columbus Day holiday, the healing can begin.
Until that time, we must continue to do our best to educate those who shrug their shoulders and say, ''big deal.'' We must not shop at stores that show their support of slavery and genocide by advertising Columbus Day celebration sales, such as Macy's, Nordstrom, J.C. Penney, Sears, Home Depot, Michaels, Jo-Ann Fabric and Levitz. There are so many other stores that do not honor Columbus. We can spend our money at their stores instead.
