Cole accepts GOP leader's apology for Indian slur

U.S. Rep. Tom Cole said Monday that a top Republican leader’s apology for using the offensive term “honest Injun” should be enough to put that issue to rest. “I think that’s sufficient,” the Oklahoma Republican said. Cole, a member of the Chickasaw Nation of Oklahoma who is believed to be the only enrolled member of an American Indian tribe in Congress, said he accepted Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele’s explanation concerning his use of the term during a television appearance.
