A blizzard warning has whirled away a hurricane from striking Buffalo, New York—the NHL Carolina Hurricanes, that is.

Hazardous conditions in the Buffalo area forced officials to postpone the Carolina Hurricanes Buffalo Sabres matchup scheduled Tuesday night. The Sabres confirmed that the game is off.

Freezing cold temperatures, intense winds and a complete whiteout are expected until Wednesday morning at 6 a.m. where the local weather alert issued seven to 14 feet of snow. Officials say that they are concerned most about fans and team members traveling to First Niagara Center where the game will be played.

The Raleigh News Observerreports that it was the first weather postponement of a Sabres game since December 6, 2000, against the New Jersey Devils. That game was played on December 7.
